Vintage Perfumes, Not so Much a Thing of the Past
January 6th, 2010 | Vintage Perfume
When I think of perfume, I have feelings of nostalgia. Not because I’m too old or that I have not had the opportunity to sense this type of scent recently but because the word seems outdated to me. Perfume to me reminds me of Audrey Hepburn and while she did eat her breakfast at Tiffany’s and ultimately wanted diamonds, there is an association with scent that I just can’t shake. The blue box and the blue bag that would accompany it, even has a scent to it that is indescribable.
Recently, it seems that there has been a desire to be in touch with the past and relive some of these memories with scents that are no longer available, scents that are now considered vintage. I have never been able to understand the idea behind coveting something that was considered vintage. It seemed like it wasn’t progressive, it wasn’t forward thinking, it wasn’t modern so why live in the past? That’s not the case, however, some of these scents remind us of a simpler time, a more romantic time.
Maybe there’s something about owning a Louis Ferad Justine unopened box from the 1960’s that keeps us connected to this simpler life. Maybe it’s the fact that it was manufactured in France and there is romantic mystique connected with the idea. Either way, there are a variety of ways to purchase these items online, complete with modern conveniences connecting you to the nostalgic.
Often times, it not so much about the scent that’s important, it’s about the way that it is packaged and presented. That is maybe one of the reasons why vintage scents are becoming so popular, what one finds in the department store just doesn’t look as pretty on your night table as our previous products once did. It’s sometimes difficult to find these often one of a kind pieces and you may never want to actually use them, however websites such as ebay.com as well as other independent sites may sell these gems. Some of them even come at quite an affordable price between the ranges of 40.00 and 60.00 dollars.
It honestly doesn’t matter whether you wish to collect the beautiful craftsmanship of these bottles or truly miss the scent that they once provided. It only matters if you have a connection to the designers and to the past. Why purchase something from a major department store when you may own something completely unrecognizable to the discerning customer? Like Ms. Hepburn, standing outside of the Tiffany’s Store and eating her breakfast, fantasizing about something romantic and eternal like a ring, think about scents as being eternal. It’s easy to close your eyes and remember a fragrance from your past and be completely taken to that place.
Next time, when you are thinking of purchasing a new scent and going to the department store for advice, think about collecting something more unrecognizable. It just might be something that sets you apart from the crowd as well as connect you to the past.
