Understanding what Eau de Parfum Perfume is, and how it differentiates from eau de Toilette perfume is an important part of making sure that you choose the right fragrances for the right purpose. The truth is, there are some very large differences between Eau de Parfum Perfume and Eau de Toilette, to the point where most manufacturers or fragrances like to create both for completely different purposes.

If you are sniffing around for a new fragrance or perfume, you may find Eau de Parfum Perfume varieties as well as Eau de Toiletter perfume varieties, and understanding the differences is vitally important.

Most perfumes, Eau de Parfum Perfume included, are complex combinations of essential oils derived from plants and other natural materials, as well as synthetic products that are designed to increase the lasting power of the fragrance while heightening its scent capabilities. The liquid base that is used for Eau de Parfum Perfume is alcohol, and the ratio of the alcohol to the concentrates of scented perfume is what determines how the final concoction is going to be labeled.

From the highest type of concentration to the lowest, the different types of presume that are available to you are as follows:

- Perfume - Also known as extract perfume, perfume is capable of having as many as 15 % to 40 % of perfume concentrates. This is the purest known form of a scented product, and as a result it also happens to be the most expensive type of fragrance on the market.

- Eau de Parfum Perfume - Eau de Parfum Perfume contains between 7 % and 15 % of perfume concentrates, and it is the most common and the most popular type of perfume that is available on the market. It provides a long lasting fragrance effect and it generally does not cost nearly what the extract perfume will cost.

- Eau de Toilette Perfume - This type of perfume has only between 1 % and 6 % in perfume concentrates in general. What this makes for is a much lighter scent that isn't going to linger as long as more intense types of fragrance. It was originally intended to serve as a body splash for people that wanted to wake up to a nice fragrance first thing in the morning. So not only is this not as strong as Eau de Parfum Perfume, but it is also not as long lasting in general.

- Eau de Cologne - This name is sometimes used in an interchangeable manner with Eau de Toilette, but they are not the same thing. This is a light and fresh fragrance that contains citrus oils. Another name for Eau de Cologne is Eau Fraiche.
