Discounted perfume can make fragrance shopping feel like Christmas. But you may not be getting everything you think when you're paying half price for your favorite scents. First of all, everything and everything one that offers you a discount on perfume is not a scam. There are very legitimate stores online and off that sell brand name perfume and cologne at a considerable discount. These are discounted perfume outlets, and they're a great way to pay less for your favorites.

But as in every industry there are less than scrupulous people who'll give you a great discount, but sell you a product that's not all it's cracked up to be. Have you ever been approached in a parking lot by someone selling perfume? It happens where I live often. First of all, anyone selling you something in a parking lot is probably not selling a fantastic product--you guessed it, or they wouldn't be doing it in a parking lot.

Even so, people have to make a living somehow. But though these pretty skilled salespeople point out what a great discount you'll get with their product because you're paying cash, they don't really stress to you that you're buying an off-brand, knockoff product.

When you're being sold an imitation of a designer brand, that's not discounted perfume, that's fakery. Of course, some people are perfectly content to wear a scent that's just a little bit different than their favorite, when they're only paying 30% of what the real stuff costs. I'm not one of those people. I'd rather pay a little more for a better product, and one that smells like I want it to smell.

You can even buy imitations right in discount and department stores. People who don't shop carefully often don't know they've purchased an imitation until they're already at home and finally examining the product. Those tall, skinny bottles of bottle spray that say Giorgio and Red on the bottle in large print point out in much smaller print that you should compare it to those designer fragrances. The implication is that they're really close to those signature fragrances. But close is often not nearly close enough.

Discounted perfume, however, is really the name brand stuff at a discount, not imitation or "really close." There are sites online and stores in malls where you do get a good discount on name brand perfume and cologne. Just be sure that when you're purchasing in person, you really look at the box and the bottle to make sure you're getting the authentic product you want.

Sometimes an imitation manufacturer will copy everything almost perfectly. But to avoid being sued, they must change something. Often it's the spelling of the fragrance. One letter may be different, even though the design is the same. That's why it's important to look at it carefully. When purchasing discounted perfume online, be sure and read the fine print so that you're sure you're getting an actual quality product and not an imitation barely worth the discounted price you're paying.
