I've never been a girl who runs out to get the next hot thing, and that includes celebrity perfume. In fact, I've always been a little of the opposite. If everyone's doing something, I'm probably going to be the one in the group who poo-poos the very idea of it. I have, to date, never bought a celebrity perfume. But after sniffing a few recently, I may have to change my mind.
I understand the appeal of celebrity perfume, clothing and endorsements. People who like a celebrity are more inclined to purchase things that actor or sports star tells them is great. That's why companies pay millions of dollars to have celebrities star in their commercials--they know the sales boost will be incredible.
But more than just endorsing a product, celebrity perfume brands bear their names, along with clothing lines, jewelry and other items. It's no longer about Ricardo Montalban touching the rich, Corinthian leather or Joe Namath showing you that this razor works better than that other one. Now you purchase a product with an actual famous name on it.
Britney Spears' and Jessica Simpson's fragrances might be fabulous, but since I'm not a fan of either of them I never really bothered to look into their celebrity perfume brands. I do like Halle Berry, however, and so I sampled her new scent the other day. I liked it. One of Celine Dion's scents was out on the counter so I spritzed it, too. And I liked it. I don't know that I want to run out and by them, but I do wonder how much I'm influenced by their celebrity.
I know that I look at Britney Spears or Shania Twain, and pretty much decide that their fragrances aren't something I'm going to like. Could I profile or stereotype them any more than that? I think I may make a point of testing their fragrances just to see if I'm right. But if my opinion of their celebrity affects my judgment, I may never really know.
I do know that I usually like celebrity men's scents. International soccer star David Beckham has a few out, and I'd be perfectly happy to smell any of them on a guy that's close enough to sniff. His wife, Victoria Beckham (otherwise known as Posh Spice) has her own fragrances, too. I haven't tried them, because I'm not a Spice Girl fan. Is that silly, or what?
Celebrity perfume is certainly not something to discount out of hand like I did for so long. And I think that if you know someone who likes one of those perfumes, man or woman, it makes a great gift. Who wouldn't want to find a celebrity under the Christmas tree, after all?
But it should go without saying that just because you like a celebrity, don't expect to love their signature scent. The celebrity perfume brands are created with input from the celebrity, but they are designed by professionals with a certain effect in mind.
