It typically describes fragrances that have sparkling floral and citrus notes laid over dark and earthy bases of patchouli, oak moss, woods and labdanum. This is a fragrance family, but fragrance families are largely subjective so a variety of different fragrances may fit into this category.

Cistus – This word is used to describe Labdanum perfume scents.

Citron – This is a type of citrus fruit tree that is often known as the cedrat lemon. It is not actually a true lemon, but it is related to both limes and lemons. The citron note is derived from the peel of the fruit, which is used in perfume scents.

Civet – A civet is a cat that resembles a fox and is related in family to the mongoose. The musk of a civet is produced through a gland at the base of the tail. Most modern perfume scents actually utilize a synthetic fixative that is meant to resemble natural civet musk.

Clary Sage – This is an herb that, when in essential oil form, is described as being both bittersweet and sweet in scent, and it has nuances of tobacco, hay and amber.

Clou de Girofle – This is the French word for clove perfume scents.

Coffret – This is the word for a gift box or a gift set. Coffrets may include a number of perfume scents, or a specific fragrance and accompanying body products.

Copahu Balm – This is also known as Copaiba basalm and is oil that is derived from the Copaifera family of trees. Copahu balm has a complex perfume scent that has been described as being mild, sweet and peppery.

Coumarin – This is a compound which can smell similarly to vanilla. It is typically derived from the Tonka Bean, however it can also be found in sweet grass, lavender and a number of other plants. It has been banned in the United States as a food additive because of toxicity issues, but it can be used in anti-coagulants, rat poisons and oddly enough, also as a valuable component in many perfumes and incense.

Cuir – This is the French word for leather perfume scents.

Cypriol – This is a type of essential oil that is derived from the Indian papyrus. Sometimes the Cypriol term is used in an interchangeable nature with the word papyrus when listing perfume notes.

Davana – This is an oil that is derived from the Artemisia pallens, and it is described to have an odor that is sweet and fruity in nature.

Elemi – This is a gum resin used in perfume scents that introduces a citrus like fragrance that is fresh, light and balsamic spicy.

Epices – This is the French word for spices, and is commonly used in describing perfume scents.

When it is dried, this tree resin is said to produce a strong aroma that has elements both of cinnamon and vanilla. Tolu is also used sometimes to make cough syrup. It is closely related in terms of tree species to the Balsam of Peru as well.

Tonka Bean - This is a pod the size of a thumb that comes from a plant that is native to Brazil. The Tonka bean is said to have a scent that resembles vanilla though it also has strong hints of almonds, cloves and cinnamon. Tonka bean pods are cheaper in general than vanilla pods, and so sometimes they are used as a substitute for Vanilla, especially outside of the United States. Vanilla - This is derived from a seed pod that comes from the vanilla orchid. The vanilla orchid is a type of flowering vine that is originally from Mexico, however most of today's modern day vanilla is actually sourced from Madagascar. The vanilla orchid's actual flower has no scent at all. There is a lot of hand processing that is required in order to create true vanilla, and so vanilla tends to be quite expensive in turn.

Vetiver - This is a grass that has heavy and fibrous roots that can be used to distill an oil with a rich, dense and earthy scent that features woody perfume scents. This grass is known to be used for erosion control in many countries as well.

Yuzu - This is a type of citrus fruit that is grown in Japan, appears like a smallish grapefruit and has a flavor that resembles the combination between a mandarin orange and a grapefruit.

Ylang Ylang - This is a Malayan term describing an Asian evergreen tree known as Cananga Odorata. The translation means "flower of flowers".

Flanker - This is a fragrance that is designed in order to capitalize on the success of a specific master brand. For example, the J Lo Glow was followed by two flanker scents, which were Love at First Glow and Miami Glow. There are a number of flanker fragrances that are specifically released to be limited edition scents. Some flanker perfume scents are variations on an original fragrance while others do not share anything except for the name.

Fougere - This is one of many perfume and scent families or categories that is used to describe the base notes, or most concentrated notes of a particular fragrance. Fougere is named after a French word for fern. This perfume and scent family generally centers on herbaceous accords including notes such as coumarin, lavender, oak moss, bergamot and woods.

Frangipani - This is a tropical flower that is also regarded as West Indian Jasmine, though it is not actually a member of the Jasmine family at all. It is also known as Plumeria. The Frangipani flower is a flower that is commonly used for making leis.

Frankincense - This is a gum resin that is used in perfume and scent. It comes from a tree known as Boswellia that can be found in both Arabia and Eastern Africa as well. Frankincense is harvested through an incision on the tree bark, allowing milky juice to leak out. When this leaky juice hardens over a period of months, it is connected. Another name for Frankincense when used in perfume and scent is Olibanum.

Galbanum - This is a gum resin imparting green fragrances to scent and perfume.

Gourmand - In scent and perfume, this word is used to describe fragrances that evoke smells reminiscent of foods such as fruits, chocolate or honey.

Guaiac - This is a type of wood, and the oil is derived through steam distillation. The tree produces some of the hardest and densest wood that is known.

Headspace Technology - This is a means of capturing an odor of any substance using an apparatus that resembles a bell jar. This process has allowed for many scent and perfumes to mimic plant, flower and food notes that would not normally make it possible to be extracted.

Hedione - This is a perfume and scent chemical that has a radiant and yet soft jasmine aroma. It is especially appreciate for the diffusive effect that it offers.

Heliotrope - This actually refers to a number of flowers botanically speaking, but when it comes to perfume and scent it refers to heliotropium flowers that have a strong and vanilla like fragrance with just sweet almond undertone.

Breathing perfume scents right out of the bottle is not going to give you an accurate representation of what the perfume scent is. The best way for you to achieve this is to allow it to air out on your skin, or to spray it on a test strip for example.

The next thing that you are going to want to keep in mind is the vocabulary for perfume scents. Here is a look at some of the vocabulary and terms that you should know when it comes to perfume scents.

  • Accord - This is the result when you blend two or more different scents in order to produce a new scent.
  • Body - This is the main theme of any perfume scents, and is also known as the heart or the middle of the fragrance.
  • Base Notes - Also known as bottom notes, the base notes are the ingredients that are the least volatile, meaning that they are the slowest ones to evaporate away. They give the fragrance its long lasting qualities. Bottom and base notes are also commonly known as fixatives.
  • Bridge - This is the transition from one of the notes to another within a perfume fragrance. The bridge defines the smoothness of this particular transition.
  • Dry Down - This is the last and final phase of all perfume scents, and it is comprised of all of the base notes of the fragrance.
  • Middle Note - The middle is the body of the composition of the perfume, also known as the heart, and it reveals not only the character of the perfume scents but also their family classification as well. The middle notes do not typically become apparent until the top notes begin to evaporate, following 10 or 20 minutes or so.
  • Note - These are the different components of the fragrance, which fall into one of the three distinct phrases of the fragrance's evaporative profile.
  • Thread - The thread is a perfume's capability of harmoniously flowing from each phase to the next in a manner that is smooth and complete.
  • Top Note - This is the first scent impression that perfume scents give off. The top note is comprised of the ingredients that become apparent first, directly after application of the perfume fragrance on the skin. The top notes generally only last for approximately 10 to 20 minutes.

Now that you have a better idea of what makes perfume scents, you can better take advantage of those perfume scents that you purchase and use.

When you understand the relationship between perfume and scent, you can better choose the fragrances that will meet your needs. Here are some of the most commonly used perfume scents and notes that you should be aware of.

Absinthe - This perfume note is a strong herbal liqueur that has been distilled with licorice, anise, hyssop, fennel, veronica, angelica, lemon balm and wormwood.

Absolute - This is the word for an essence, and it is the material that is extracted from either a flower or plant to create perfume notes.

Accord - Perfume accords are perfume scents that are comprised of three or four different notes that are balanced together, losing their individual identities in the process.

Agar Wood - This comes from the Aquilaria trea, and is an aromatic resin that is produced when the tree is under attack by a fungus. It has been popular in the Middle East as a source of both incense and for perfume notes.

Amber - Accords that are referred to as amber were developed in order to mimic the ambergris scent, since ambergris is no longer used to create perfume notes.

Ambergris - This is a secretion from the sperm whale that was initially used as a fixative but now is only synthetically developed in perfume notes such as amberlyn, ambroxan and ambrox. Ambergris has a scent that is woody and sweet.

Ambrette - This is the oil that is obtained from seeds with a musk-like odor. Ambrette is commonly used in place of real musk, which is animal derived.

Animalic - This refers to ingredients and perfume notes that are animal derived, including musk, divet, ambergris and castoreum. In modern day perfumery, these ingredients are typically replaced by synthetic perfume notes.

Anise - This is an annual herb that comes from the parsley family, and is grown for the fruits that it produces, aniseed. The fruits have a flavor that is strong and licorice-like.

Anosmia - This is known as the inability to be able to smell odors. Many people actually have selective anosmia, which means that they cannot smell certain scents.

Artemisia - This is another word for wormwood.

Attar - This is the English form of the word itr, which is the Arabic word representing fragrance or perfume. Traditional attars are made out of distilled floral essences with a sandalwood oil base.

Baies de Genièvre – This is the French word for juniper berry.

Baies Rose – This is another name for pink peppercorns, which come from a tree known as Schinus Molle. This tree is also known as either the Peruvian pepper tree or the Californian pepper tree. These are berries that have been dried rather than actual peppercorns. Sometimes they are simply referred to as pink berries.
