I wanted to try Eau de Cuir de Russie (Russian Leather) first, because this is a fragrance that appears in other brands, and generally it is one that I like.
Leather is rich and sumptuous. The best leather is supple, emitting a fragrance, giving sensual pleasure, not only in the feel of the leather, but in the scent that wafts upwards from new leather. One has only to mention the word leather for it to immediately conjure up both the scent and the texture in memories.
Why Russian Leather?
The story is told of this leather first appearing in France with Diaghilev's Russian Ballet troupe whose dancers wore supple leather boots (called SAFIAN in Russian). So successful were these ballets that it created a market for this special leather which even was used to bind books.
The popularity of Russian leather:
This popularity was reflected in the number of perfumes which came out bearing the name CUIR DE RUSSIE between the years of 1905 and 1935. While each bore the same name, they each were creatively different from each other, except for the basic leather base note used to anchor the fragrances. Each nose brought to bear his or her own signature, inspired by the story line of the particular house.
Often the base note is enveloped in floral notes to soften the sharpness of the leather.
In reviving this forgotten perfume, …Le Jardin Retrouvé has created a brand new interpretation of RUSSIAN LEATHER. While it still follows the strict traditions of French perfumery-making, it is distinguishable by its originality stemming from the various flowery and green notes, diffused and long-lasting, exhalting the the richness and warmth of the Jardin Retrouvé's RUSSIAN LEATHER.
Who can wear this?
I quite like it on me, so while it is a men’s fragrance as envisioned by LJR, it is surely suitable for women.
What is it like?
It is not as sharp as Cabochard, which may be a good thing, and it softens significantly faster. At it’s end point, it is floral, like Cabochard perfume, but it has a different nuance. I am applying from a small vial, so dabbing not spritzing. As such, it stays close to my skin, like a perfume. I don’t smell any alcohol that has to burn off to get to the scent.
At first, it almost seems there is no leather, but inhaling deeper brings the soft, sure leather into the fore. A few moments in, it seems all leather, no need to inhale deep to catch it. After it settles in, it is softly floral with leather nuances.
What I like about it:
I like the movement of the fragrance. It is almost like a symphony where the music begins soft, moves to a crescendo, then soft again, like flowing water.
My take:
I give this fragrance a 4. It is a lovely leather, and if you enjoy wearing the scent of leather, I believe you would like this one.
