Tonka Bean - This is a pod the size of a thumb that comes from a plant that is native to Brazil. The Tonka bean is said to have a scent that resembles vanilla though it also has strong hints of almonds, cloves and cinnamon. Tonka bean pods are cheaper in general than vanilla pods, and so sometimes they are used as a substitute for Vanilla, especially outside of the United States. You can reference Coumarin for more information.
Vanilla - This is derived from a seed pod that comes from the vanilla orchid. The vanilla orchid is a type of flowering vine that is originally from Mexico, however most of today's modern day vanilla is actually sourced from Madagascar. The vanilla orchid's actual flower has no scent at all. There is a lot of hand processing that is required in order to create true vanilla, and so vanilla tends to be quite expensive in turn.
