Perfume deodorant seems to be a pretty popular Christmas stocking stuffer for some reason. I've never understood the appeal. In fact, I was given a gift of perfume deodorant one year from, of all people, my mother-in-law. She picked out some Avon brand of roll-on that I suppose she thought was lightly scented and feminine and presented it to me for Christmas. I wondered if she thought I had an odor that needed covering up.
If you're purchasing perfume deodorant for yourself because you like the scent, then stock up and enjoy. But be wary of giving it to other people. And in fact, if you've never used it yourself and you think you'll like it, you might want to be prepared for disappointment.
If you've never gotten a boxed perfume set as a gift, perhaps you won't understand. But as someone who has been the recipient of many of these over the years, I can tell you that if you find a perfume or cologne that you love, be happy with the bottled scent. The loose powder, body lotion, perfume deodorant, body spritzer, cream or prettily shaped soap may not small exactly the same.
I'm unsure why this is. I suppose the other ingredients necessary to create perfume deodorant simply change the scent. The necessary ingredients to make soap must alter the tones in some way. It's not that the scent is always unrecognizable. But it's just not the same. Slathering on a handful of body lotion that's supposed to smell like your favorite fragrance is just not the same as wearing the perfume.
Roll-on perfume even frequently disappoints me. The quality just isn't the same. In the case of designer and more expensive perfume, I think it's a clear case of the way perfume is designed. Because it reveals itself in layers, with top, middle and base notes, it's distinctively different the longer you've had it on your skin. A body lotion or God forbid talcum powder in the same scent simply doesn't behave the same when you're wearing it. It can release in layers the same way.
You can take your favorite perfume and daub it under your armpits, smell it a few hours later, and still not be anywhere near what that same brand of perfume deodorant might smell like once you have it on. Perfume deodorant that simply advertises as having a certain scent, like gardenia or sandalwood or orange, those are pretty satisfactory if you're looking for that type of underarm scent. But deodorants that are supposed to smell like my favorite perfumes just never quite make it.
Each time I've been given one of those gift sets with the tiny bottle of perfume or cologne that I do like, and lotion, body spray and deodorant that I don't, I at least make an effort. I open the stuff and use it one time, optimistically. In a few hours I'm either suffocated by the smell, or it's a light something I don't really recognize, and one more container of perfume deodorant has proved itself a failure. Just give me the perfume!
