Perfume and Scent Glossary

heliotropeFactice - This is a perfume bottle that is only made for commercial display purposes. The contents of the bottle, then, are not actually perfume.

Flanker - This is a fragrance that is designed in order to capitalize on the success of a specific master brand. For example, the J Lo Glow was followed by two flanker scents, which were Love at First Glow and Miami Glow. There are a number of flanker fragrances that are specifically released to be limited edition scents. Some flanker perfume scents are variations on an original fragrance while others do not share anything except for the name.

Fougere - This is one of many perfume and scent families or categories that is used to describe the base notes, or most concentrated notes of a particular fragrance. Fougere is named after a French word for fern. This perfume and scent family generally centers on herbaceous accords including notes such as coumarin, lavender, oak moss, bergamot and woods.

Frangipani - This is a tropical flower that is also regarded as West Indian Jasmine, though it is not actually a member of the Jasmine family at all. It is also known as Plumeria. The Frangipani flower is a flower that is commonly used for making leis.

Frankincense - This is a gum resin that is used in perfume and scent. It comes from a tree known as Boswellia that can be found in both Arabia and Eastern Africa as well. Frankincense is harvested through an incision on the tree bark, allowing milky juice to leak out. When this leaky juice hardens over a period of months, it is connected. Another name for Frankincense when used in perfume and scent is Olibanum.

Galbanum - This is a gum resin imparting green fragrances to scent and perfume.

Gourmand - In scent and perfume, this word is used to describe fragrances that evoke smells reminiscent of foods such as fruits, chocolate or honey.

Guaiac - This is a type of wood, and the oil is derived through steam distillation. The tree produces some of the hardest and densest wood that is known.

Headspace Technology - This is a means of capturing an odor of any substance using an apparatus that resembles a bell jar. This process has allowed for many scent and perfumes to mimic plant, flower and food notes that would not normally make it possible to be extracted.

Hedione - This is a perfume and scent chemical that has a radiant and yet soft jasmine aroma. It is especially appreciate for the diffusive effect that it offers.

Heliotrope - This actually refers to a number of flowers botanically speaking, but when it comes to perfume and scent it refers to heliotropium flowers that have a strong and vanilla like fragrance with just sweet almond undertone.
