Men have always liked wearing scent. Whether it's aftershave, cologne or simply nicely scented soap men enjoy smelling good. There's been a debate going on about men's cologne versus men's aftershave. Which one is best and why?

Well, to begin with there seems to be little difference these days between men's cologne and aftershave. Many men, especially younger men, use the terms interchangeably. Actually men's aftershave is designed to be put on immediately after shaving. Aftershave products are made with more astringent properties. They are designed to help close your pores after shaving.

That's why aftershave often stings. Aftershave is made to be worn a little differently than men's cologne. Aftershave is typically poured into the hands and then slapped onto the face. Men's cologne isn't for the face area. It's made to be sprayed on the neck or chest.

Men's aftershave is also much lighter. It may seem to have a strong scent when it's going on but it dissipates very quickly. Because it's put primarily on the face and neck aftershave is less potent. Aftershave is very limited in the scents that you can pick from. They are made in several scents that typically coordinate with shaving cream. Aftershave tends to have a cheap sort of connotation.

Men's cologne on the other hand has come a long way in the last 25 years. There are men's designer cologne scents and men's hair care and skin care products all with coordinating scents. All this seemed just too girly for men up until the last couple of decades. The men's cologne and perfume market has really picked up due to all the celebrity fragrances that have popped onto the scene.

Men and women both like to wear fragrance that's endorsed by their favorite celebrity. After all wearing it will put you a little bit closer to their world. Aftershave is pretty much a thing of the past – left in the wake of men's cologne. The market for men's cologne has jumped drastically along with other men's toiletry articles. We're trying hard to get our men more sophisticated.

There are almost as many men's cologne fragrances to choose from as there are women's. Of course remember that probably about half of all men's cologne is purchased by women. Yes, women love to buy scents for their man. Cologne is a top seller for gift giving for men. It helps if the man could let their woman know the scents that they like to wear. Many men have a bathroom cabinet full of partial bottles of cologne that they got as gifts but didn't like.

Men need to find a scent that they love and stick with it. Men, like women, can have a signature scent. Men's scents are typically filled with spicy undertones and fresh outdoorsy smells. Take the time to find a fragrance that suits you and that you like the scent of. Men, take charge of your scent!
