Is that $12 bottle of cheap fragrance really better for your budget than the $60 or higher designer fragrance? If you just look at the numbers, of course it is. But in the long run, will you really save money buying cheap fragrance? And is it worth any possible savings to wear a scent that you like instead of one that you truly love?
You've probably noticed that fragrances labeled as perfume are generally the most expensive. That's because they're the most potent. Perfumes contain more essential oils than other types of fragrance. Colognes are next in line. Some of the most popular cheap fragrance brands are colognes that have been around for years. Cologne is less intense and long-lasting. It's also generally a much simpler scent, perhaps a single fragrance, where perfume is much more complex.
A cheap fragrance typically has the same scent all day, though by varying degrees. Perfumes are layered, with top notes that dissipate to reveal middle notes that make up the heart of the scent. These combine with the base notes, which are the scents that reveal themselves only as the perfume warms to your skin. There's a subtle difference in each note that gives qualify perfume a changeable, layered quality and makes it long-lasting.
A bottle of cologne spray for women or men can be a good cheap fragrance choice at $10 - $20, where a perfume in the same amount cost could $100. But because there's more alcohol as opposed to fragrance, the scent won't last nearly as long as perfume, nor will it be as intense.
This causes a problem for some people who don't realize how strongly the scent of their cologne can be when over-applied. Because perfume is more intense, it's not easy to over apply. And if you do so, you'll immediately know it, and you'll be aware of it until you get used to the smell completely. With cologne, you know it fades quickly, so the tendency is to overdo it now so you can have a light scent later.
Eau de parfum is a good compromise, because it's less expensive than perfume but it has the same rich, layered qualities. Rather than coming in a spray bottle, this cheap fragrance is usually applied with an applicator or your fingertip. Pulse points, inner elbows, neck, cleavage and behind the knees are excellent places for a dab of eau de parfum, so your body heat continues sending the scent out. This can be overdone as well, but if you're careful it's a good budget option.
Eau de toilette is definitely a cheap fragrance because it contains the smallest amount of oils. It will also only last a few hours, so you'll be reapplying often.
Trying keeping track of how much fragrance you use to see if cheaper options are working for you. When you're spraying through a bottle of cologne in a month or two, the cost of staying in a supply of this cheap fragrance really is comparable to having a good bottle of perfume that lasts you several months.
