Fragrance and Cologne Scent Shopping
January 29th, 2010 | Perfume, cologne
Searching for the proper scent that suits you best can be a daunting task. Will my partner like it or will they be repulsed and not want to be near me? Will customers standing in line behind me at the supermarket checkout counter run away in disgust? Or even worse, will the scent be so horrifyingly putrid, that I’ll be destined to be single for life? There is a lot of pressure when choosing the proper scent which will be your signature for years to come, or at least for the life of the bottle if you don’t ultimately like it. So choose wisely.
The Department Store
So you have finally run out of your bottle of cologne given to you by your father when you were ten and decide that rubbing fabric softener sheets on your clothes is no longer a good solution. The department store might have just what you need. The only problem will come with your ultimate decision, which one to select. Employees at these department stores don’t necessarily work for the organization, they most likely work for the individual fragrance companies that they are selling their wares. Of course, all of these sales associate’s would love for you to try their product so beware of eager employees hoping to spray you with their most current perfumes as you walk by. Be strong and take your time to find out what you truly like and what ultimately suits your personality. Ask the associate at each counter to spray their scent on a sample card instead of attacking you with the bottle on your person. This way, you have the opportunity to sample multiple products without having the fragrances mix to the point of no discernment.
Find out what you like and ask questions
When you do find a fragrance that seems nice to you, ask the associate questions about the designer, where the scent comes from, and what kinds of ingredients are included in the product. Do you like floral scents, something more citrus, or maybe a little more musky? Ask the sales representative what scent they wear or which ones they prefer. Get personal. It’s ok, it’s their job and you are about to drop anywhere from 40.00 to 100.00 dollars on this purchase. Besides, this will be the scent that identifies who you are, what you like to do, maybe even which car you drive.
The final choice
Now you have narrowed it down to two, your final two top choices. Choose your favorite, the one that you think you are most likely to purchase and spray a small sample on your wrist to see how it works with your body chemistry. Each person’s body reacts to scents differently so while it may smell nice on the card or in the bottle, it may not be the same on your body. Give it some time and once you are satisfied that this scent, this purchase is going to be the one that you can live with for the next few months, head to the register. Call your significant other for a date, head to the bar to cruise the single crowd, or go home, reveling in the fact that you have purchased a new you.

Department stores can be a stressful experience and a sensory overload to say the least. As a L’Bel Paris rep, I have to attest to the one-on-one experience of choosing the right scent. When I picked up a new scent for my husband, I was able to take my time in choosing the right fragrance without feeling rushed into a sale. I ended up choosing Devos Magnetic, this real man’s-man scent, and now he smells like the woods and bourbon and sandalwood. Mmm! Oh, yeah, and he likes it too.
