Here are some more frequently asked questions about the use of fine fragrance, giving you a basic foundation through which you can develop an understanding of perfumery and the perfume trade.

What is the purpose of fragrance notes, and what are they referring to?

Every fragrance is going to be comprised of a number of different scents that are combined together, and these scents are referred to as notes. The top notes in a fragrance are the very light scents, and they only last for between five and ten minutes. The middle notes, or the heart of the fragrance, become apparent within 10 to 15 minutes following application and they can generally last for an hour or more depending on the fragrance. Finally, the bottom notes are the heavier ingredients in the composition. These are the notes that last the longest period of time, typically for several hours although some can last all throughout the day. All fragrances have top notes, middle notes and base or bottom notes in order to make them complete and well rounded.

Why is it that the same fragrance can last longer on one person than on another?

People that are blonde haired or that have lighter skin are going to have a natural tendency toward having dry skin. Fragrances are essentially just oils that are meant to be absorbed by your skin the same way a moisturizing product would be. In order to make it possible for your fragrance to last for a longer period of time, then you should use a body lotion that matches or simply an unscented body lotion on your pulse points before you apply the fragrance. This will help your skin soak up the fragrance product, allowing it to last for a longer period of time.

Why is it that the same fragrance can smell completely differently when it is applied on different people?

There are a number of different factors that are capable of impacting how a fragrance interacts with an individual person, including their diet, their age and their body chemistry. Fragrances consist of a number of different essential oils, and certain essential oils are going to have affinity to different skin types. Some essential oils are going to be absorbed by the skin while others simply are not. What this is going to do is create an imbalance on your skin, accounting for the differences experienced between different people. The best way to know how a fragrance is going to behave on your skin is to sample it, as you cannot judge a fragrance by how it smells on someone else if you want to get an accurate picture of what it will be like on you.
