There are few things more heartbreaking for a perfume lover than to have a favorite scent end up among a manufacturer's discontinued perfumes. It's like suddenly having your favorite food no longer available, or your favorite TV show going off the air. Or, horrors, having your favorite makeup brand disappear just when you've mastered how to apply it perfectly.

Discontinued perfumes are still often available a variety of places once they're no longer produced, so all hope isn't lost. But if they truly are discontinued worldwide, then you have a pretty limited amount of time to purchase and use your favorite discontinued perfumes. A few years in a bottle changes the quality of a perfume, so a very old bottle can be extremely weak in scent, and even altered from the fragrance you love so much.

If you find out a favorite or yours is now one of the many discontinued perfumes, contact the company that makes it. There's a very good chance that it's been discontinued for production where you live, but still produced in another country. Just like you'll find seaweed flavored potato chips in Japan and not the United States, cultural differences and preferences affect things like fragrance as well. A scent discontinued in the United States might still be produced in Europe or elsewhere around the world.

Also, for a while you may still be able to find it in a variety of stores. If it's really discontinued, then you may want to stock up while you can when you do find it so can enjoy it for as long as possible. Some stores simply have a larger stockpile so even if they don't get new shipments they'll continue to sell it for a while.

Online stores often have a large supply, so if you can't find your favorite discontinued perfumes in local stores, search online perfume outlets and shops. Once the supply is exhausted in these types of stores, then there's always eBay and other online auctions. The biggest drawback to finding your favorites this way is that if other people are looking for the same thing, you could end up paying exorbitant prices. It may or may not be worth it to you.

If you're just looking for some discontinued perfumes because of the bottle, then age isn't much of a factor. But remember, even if the bottle has never been opened, perfume that's more than a few years old is probably not going to please you. If it still does smell the same in the bottle, it may not once on your skin.

While you still have a supply of your favorite, try to find a replacement. Search for perfumes with the same tones and qualities so that you can still enjoy your favorite scents when the supply does run out, as it will eventually. Scents fall into categories like Oriental, clean, floral, citrus, woody, summer scents and general categories. Find a new scent with the same qualities, and it'll be easier to say goodbye to discontinued perfumes.
