There are many different types of cologne for men. Men's cologne usually consists of woodsy, outdoorsy or manly scents. While men may choose their own cologne sometimes they often let the woman in their life pick it out for them. This may work well because a recent study found that men and women have different ways of choosing scents. Men and women often choose totally diverse scents when they pick on their own.

What this may mean is that men are choosing their cologne based on what they like when actually they need to be thinking more about what smells attractive to the opposite sex. It seems cologne for men is a complex subject. Each woman has her own tastes when it comes to scent – so how does it all work?

Women tend to choose scents for their man based on their own preferences and this may lead to a perfect cologne scent. The women in a study chose cologne for men that was opposite of their own cologne choices for themselves. This may have more to do with women growing up linking certain scents to men and others to women.

What it comes down to is basically that women still prefer a man to smell like a man. Women are more attracted to manly scents than to those with undertones that may seem slightly more feminine. So how can a man better choose his own scent? The answer may be to simply choose a scent that you associate with men. Since there are many to pick from it can be hard to make a decision. Most men end up just picking the first one that smells okay to them.

A little further scent testing may help men come up with the best fragrance choice. Choosing cologne for men isn't easy because they all have very similar qualities. One thing that men may not understand is that cologne tends to meld with the own body's scent and may change after it warms on the body. It may not always smell exactly as it comes out of the bottle. To properly test cologne for men the man should try on a sample of the cologne and wear it to see how the cologne smells later on.

Even the same cologne for men may not smell exactly the same on every man. This is true for women's fragrance as well. Choose a scent that isn't too overpowering. While it may seem to some men that they need plenty of fragrance to mask odors (like perspiration) it doesn't work that way. Putting on too much cologne for men is a mistake. If a man wants to smell good and wants the scent to last he needs to layer the scent.

Layering the scent means that you should choose matching or complimentary scents for after-shave, deodorant and soap. This layering on the skin actually helps to create a much longer lasting scent yet still keeps it subtle. If your cologne has a woodsy scent then choose similar scents for your soap and deodorant. The best way to layer is to get products that all come in the same scent.
