Have you ever purchased a popular perfume based on a friend's recommendation? I've done that before, and lived to regret it. No matter how much your best friend or fashion and scent soulmate loves a popular perfume, it's no guarantee that you won't absolutely cringe when you smell it. There's also something to be said for experiencing the scent on your own skin.

My grandmother loved the scent of musk, and wore one brand of musk scented popular perfume religiously. It did smell nice, until she put it on. Something about the chemistry of her body and her skin mixed with her perfume gave it an entirely different, and I thought unpleasant scent. My mother wore it one day and it smelled completely different. So you can't just buy even the most popular perfume and know that it's going to compliment you.

It's essential that you go into a store and actually put the fragrance on your skin. Ignore the people who go into the perfume aisle, spritz something into the air and then sniff. That's not a true representation of how the scent will smell on you. And after they've sprayed three or four of these into the air, it's not even a true representation of how the scent smells when sprayed in the air. You could choke a horse in a perfume aisle at Christmas time because so many people use this faulty method of checking fragrances.

To choose from the many popular perfume brands, it's best to get the help of an experience perfume salesperson. Of course, they do want to sell you the biggest, most expensive bottle possible, especially if they work at a department store that still gives them a commission. But they're knowledgeable and can be extremely helpful.

They know which popular perfume brands have very citrus tones, which are more floral, which are more appropriate for nighttime, daytime, the office and other things. If you tell them what you like, they can probably point out several popular perfume brands that might appeal to you. Just pick a couple to avoid overwhelming yourself with scents.

Bear in mind that perfume smells different when you first apply, as it starts to evaporate, and once it's completely dry. As it dries on your skin, different layers of scent will reveal themselves. So don't try a popular perfume, sniff your wrist and pull out your credit card. If you can get a small sample, or merely wait to make a purchase, you're more likely to get a perfume you really love.

Wait a few hours and see how you like the scent, as it will be a little different. If you enjoy it from application until it starts to wear off, then you'll enjoy that fragrance. And don't worry about the price--just because a bottle costs more than all the rest, that doesn't mean that it's the best one for you. Some popular perfumes aren't expensive at all, but are many women's favorite go-to fragrances.
